The painters who would become the Group of Seven shared a love of Canada's backcountry and impatience with its conservative art establishment. Impelled by the spirit of outdoorsman and artist Tom Thomson, who died in 1917, three years before his friends formed the group, they painted an outré subject in an aggressively impressionistic style. In time, they won over hostile critics, broadened their influence, and effectively established a point of departure for modern Canadian art.
